Dentistry

The mouth is often the most ignored yet most important area of the body.  The teeth feel only one sensation; pain.
If the gums and teeth are painful the pet may not eat adequately.  Also, the inflammation in the mouth causes problems in distant organs.  If infection and inflammation are present in the mouth, this serves as a source of seeding of bacteria into the bloodstream.  The chronic inflammation causes production of inflammatory proteins that deposit in other areas of the body causing disease of the heart, liver, and kidney.
Optimal dental health is important and this is best achieved with a combination of routine professional dental cleaning and home brushing.  Likewise, good dental health leads to a longer life and better overall health.
At Midland Animal Hospital, we recommend routine dental exams and  prophylaxis. Our professional staff is trained to use our two modern dental units to clean your pet’s teeth.  All our patients benefit from pre-anesthetic laboratory testing appropriate for their age and health status.  Additionally, we provide our clients with a comprehensive explanation, including before and after photos, of dental examination and cleaning.

Pet Allergies

The most common pet visits to the veterinarian is allergies. The signs of allergies and vary from ear infections causing head shaking, to itching, infection of the skin, chewing the paws, odor, and rubbing of the body on the ground or furnishings. Unfortunately, allergies can also be one of the most frustrating conditions to treat.
Complete physical examinations and thorough history are essential to develop a list of potential causes for the allergies. Diagnostic testing may also be indicated to identify the presence of infectious agents or other underlying diseases. Specialized allergy testing may also be indicated to identify specific items in the environment that the pet may be allergic to.
With this information, individualized treatment plans can be formulated. No one treatment works well for all pets and not all treatment options are not acceptable to all owners. Therefore many treatment options must be evaluated to devise the most effective plan which may range from avoidance of allergens, antihistamines, and more frequent baths, to daily medications or periodic allergy injections, or any combination of many of these items. With persistence and patience, allergies may be persistently controlled.

senior pets

Senior Pets

As your pet ages, and the same is true for ourselves, body system function changes. Several of these changes are quite obvious, such as mouth odor due to dental calculus and slowed movements due to arthritis. Other age related problems such as heart, liver and kidney disease, and certain hormonal disorders are not quite so obvious. For these reasons routine physical examinations and appropriate diagnostic testing is essential to monitor health status as our pets age.
With appropriate examinations and testing, many disease processes can be identified as early as possible. Treatment can then be initiated to control the disease process and improve overall quality of life and longevity. Once treatment is initiated, appropriate periodic monitoring is essential to minimize complications from both treatment and progression of disease.
Age appropriate diagnostic testing is also necessary in preparations for surgical procedures. As pets age, the risk for unknown disease processes to be present increases. Therefore as our pets age, more thorough diagnostic testing and precautionary measures are recommended to minimize anesthetic complications and maximize the likelihood of a positive outcome.
