Dr. Claire Spence 1

We would like to give a big welcome to Dr. Claire Spence.  Dr. Spence joined Midland Animal Hospital in June 2022.  Dr. Spence is a native of Middle Georgia and has always had a passion for animals.  She grew up  chasing  puppies and kitten around the house, as well as cows and hogs on her grandparent’s farm.  Dr. Spence worked for many different veterinary clinics during the summers, in which she got to experience the many different aspects of veterinary medicine.

Her passion led her to the University of Georgia, where she attended undergrad and veterinary school. There, she enjoyed cheering on the Bulldogs at every home football game, intramural sports, and watching a variety of TV shows with her friends. She graduated undergrad in May of 2017 with a degree in Avian Biology.

While attending UGA Vet school, Dr. Spence deepened her love for General Practice.  Her favorite thing about general practice is developing meaningful relationships with pets and pet owners. Her goal is to help pets live a happy, healthy, and pain free life for as long as possible.  She achieved her lifelong dream of graduating from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine in May of 2022.

She and her husband moved to Columbus shortly after graduation and are joined by their two dogs and two cats.  In their spare time, they enjoy fishing, watching baseball and/or football, and trying all the restaurants in town.

Dr. Tatum, a Georgia native, developed his passion for veterinary medicine on his family farm in North Georgia.  His family raised beef cattle and poultry, but also enjoyed many horses, dogs, and cats.  It was only natural he developed a love of the outdoors in the Blue Ridge Mountains and a love for working with all types of animals. Combining his love of animals and the application of science has led to a most rewarding career and it definitely shows.

Dr. Tatum attended the University of Georgia and graduated with and B.S.A. in 1988. He then attended the College of Veterinary Medicine and earned a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 1992. Prior to graduation he was honored with a Certificate of Proficiency for both Small Animal and Large Animal medicine. These honors were bestowed upon him by the Clinicians that supervised him during the clinical rotations at the University of Georgia.

Upon graduation Dr. Tatum practiced for 8 years in Americus, Ga. before calling Columbus home in 2000. He opened Midland Animal Hospital in June 2012 where he continues to practice small animal medicine and serve his community.  He believes it is important for pet owners to have phenomenal care close to home and the practice’s many procedures and services are a testament to his dedication to his clients.

Midland Animal Hospital offers wellness services, advanced diagnostics, and surgery as well as a Class 4 therapeutic laser to treat a variety of acute and chronic inflammatory conditions. The Class 4 laser has become one of his favorite tools as it has shown to provide almost immediate relief for many painful conditions and speeds healing in injury or following surgical procedures.
